VIDEOS! :) Thanks, Youtube.

I started researching Youtube videos and found some really cool links and trailers for movies that look groundbreaking and like they could possibly be the changing force in this nation. The Youtube link (below) gave me some facts about the average American’s diet and I was grossed out to think that only 1/6 of what we eat are fruits and vegetables, especially since Michael Pollan states that plants ought to make up the majority of our diets. It also made me proud that I was boycotting soda.

Also, in light of recent events, (Obama passing his health care bill), I implore this nation to prevent the problems rather than spend tons of money on fixing our “chronic malnutrition.” Health shouldn’t be an afterthought to taste.

This movie looks amazing and offers some information as to why this is such an issue in the nation and the choice we all have as consumers. Trailer for Food Matters:

They also go over the poison we give ourselves when we try to “fix” the problems we’ve so often created ourselves. 106,000 deaths from pharmaceuticals every year in the US is disgusting and just... wrong!

We’re watching this movie, called Food Inc. in class soon and I can’t wait. This is the trailer, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqQVll-MP3I&feature=related . It discusses how there is this hard veil between the American consumer (eater) and the producers (not farmers so much as factory workers).

I also found this video, which was intriguing, and I believe this man has some very valid points to be taken into serious account. Why not milk? Check it out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMHvMAUDHj4&NR=1 I know, as many others probably know too, that when I’m sick, milk multiplies my phlegm tremendously. Is it still doing that when I’m not sick? Why would I subject myself to drinking a liquid phlegm factory?

One of the few pictures from failblog.org that aren't funny.

I like this picture because it's just so blunt and true. If kids are eating fast food and their proper nutritional needs are not being met, they will be fat. Child obesity is directly correlated to disease and often is accompanied by unhappiness. Children should not have rolls on their arms. They should be playing outside and eating blueberries, you know?

Eat Well, Feel Well ; Come Bien, Se Siente Bien

Spring Break! I didn’t go anywhere special for vacations, so I’ve just been taking it easy, cooking eggs in the morning, and sleeping lots. I’ve also made a trip to Down to Earth, one of my favorite stores to buy healthy things. I got some soymilk, couscous, vegan peanut butter, tofu, sweet potato chips (so much better than greasy potato chips!), Greek yogurt, organic macaroni and cheese, pinto beans, gardenburgers (made from vegetables) and soy protein burgers (I plan on trying them both and writing the differences I find). This cost about fifty bucks, which is pretty expensive, but delicious and comes with no guilt about not eating nutritiously! I also got a Down to Earth summer roll, which are these amazing packed white bulbs stuffed with carrots, cucumbers, cold noodles, avocado, and sprouts. I’ve also tried sprouted Ezekiel bread this week too. I don’t ever eat white bread, but I’ve never heard of any type bread that didn’t even have flour in it before (check out this website if you don’t believe me http://mybloodsugar.net/foodforlife.htm )! It wasn’t bad and I ended up getting some at Costco to put with turkey and tomatoes for beach picnics. Another thing that I have learned from my Michael Pollan book is that foods that have been predigested by bacteria or fungi are necessary in a diet because they supply the mandatory nutrient, vitamin B12, which you cannot get from plants. These fermented foods like yogurt, soy sauce, sauerkraut, and sourdough bread most likely also contain probiotics, which aid digestion and the proper functioning of the immune system. As far as meat eating goes, I have adopted rule #23, which states that meat is for special occasions and is a treat. While necessary, no one should over-do meat (especially read meat which can link to heart problems). I am a vegetarian one day a week and then eat meat 3 times a week on the other six days. I usually used to eat meat every single day so this is actually a pretty big change for me. To think, ‘I already had meat, why don’t I skip that today’ is harder than I thought it would be. I love chicken, beef and breakfast meat (bacon, sausage etc.) on a Sunday morning! Alas, things are going well and I’m feeling good with my diet and the beautiful Hawaiian spring!

He visitado Down to Earth, mi tienda de comida sano favorito.

Food Cannot Satisfy All Desires

This week of mid-March I am choosing to draw my awareness to not what I eat as much as when I eat and how much I eat. As I have seen in my community service projects, and in general, so much food is wasted everyday. The average waste per person per day in O’ahu is nine pounds of trash (nearly double the national average). That’s crazy and I refuse to contribute that much. This unused food goes to landfills to rot and take up space that this world won’t have forever. Also, we Americans spend a lot of time stuffing ourselves, over consuming and then paying the price in medical problems while other parts of the world have nothing and are starving. That unfairness has always bothered me. So I have selected the following statements from “Food Rules” to focus on. ‘Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored,’ Eat Slowly (In an effort to eat less), ‘Don’t go back for seconds after a proper portion,’ ‘Stop eating before you are full,’ and ‘Consult your gut’ (because often one’s eyes are truly larger than their stomach). I sincerely just want to bring more attention to how I eat. Changing what you eat is as simple as grabbing one thing over another, but changing my habits are just as important to me, and definitely constitute a large part of this lifestyle revolution.

Slow Cooking

New additional guideline: No eating food that is called by the same name in every language (example: Whoppers and Doritos), no food that comes to you via car window, no food made in plants, and when shopping, I shall aim to avoid the center of the supermarket, shopping the peripheries. The goals of this week involve eating no fast or junk food, and trying to avoid heavily processed or packaged food. Also, I have added a no-soda rule. Nothing, even if it’s diet, because it’s not as good for you as other drinks, especially water ( I feel I know so many dehydrated people) and is toxic (ever since I heard Coke can dissolve bone in less than a day, I didn’t want it in my stomach). Absolutely no runs to McDonalds or 7-11 shall be tolerated!

Nunca puedo hacer corridos a 7-11 o McDonalds ahora!

March On

Happy March 1st! So, for the past couple of days I have been very health-conscious and trying to eat better, more natural foods such as salad, soymilk, organic granola, real yogurt, (not the cups with added sugar), lots of fruit, and whole wheat. This week’s guidelines are, “Don’t Eat Anything That Your Great-Grandmother Wouldn’t Recognize As Food, Avoid Food Products Containing Ingredients That No Ordinary Human Would Keep In The Pantry, Avoid Products That Contain High-Fructose Corn Syrup, or Some Form of Sugar (or Sweetener) Listed Among The Top Three Ingredients.” My biggest effort has gone to looking for this sugar; avoiding it, and when the white granules are necessary, choose real cane sugar rather than Splenda (I just can’t drink coffee without two sugars).
